August 29 - September 10, 2025

We will embark on an epic journey that will take us between the islands and reefs rising up from the Makassar Strait aboard the world-renowned boutique liveaboard, Arenui. Each island has its own unique character. We can see entire schools of manta rays at Sangalaki that are drawn here to feed on plankton. As well as turtles, Derawan has elusive treasures to be found; here we search for hidden critters. Maratua hosts massive marvels, such as sharks, barracudas and more mantas! At Kakaban island, plunge into the saltwater lake full with non-stinging jellyfish in the middle of the island. Dive the incredible walls encircling the island of Kakaban. In the shallow waters encircling Samama, we scan for an abundance of macro critters, hiding in plain sight. Moving on, we cross over to the Sulawesi side of the Strait. We will follow the coastline to see the many picturesque islands and bays. We can expect to dive large reefs with immense soft and hard coral coverage, incredible pelagics, including sharks on almost each dive.
 

Expedition Itinerary:

Aug 29 (Fri): Depart LAX 00:50 via Taipei to Jakarta, Indonesia (be at the airport Thur, Aug 28, in the evening).

Aug 30 (Sat): Arrive in Jakarta 13:20, check into boutique hotel in the late afternoon, free program for the evening.

Aug 31 (Sun): Jakarta old town and port eco day-tour to see the historical and legendary Dutch colonial city.

Sept 1 (Mon): Mid morning 3-hr flight from Jakarta to Tarakan, Borneo. Board the world-renowned, first-class liveaboard, Arenui, in the afternoon, which will be our home for the next 10 days and 9 nights. 

Sept 2 ~ Sept 9 (Tue~Tue): I Dive through rarely explored islands on the eastern side of Boneo, and cross over to Sulawesi for more adventurous dive sites, beaches and village visits, relax in five-star accommodations, feast on world-class meals, and enjoy paradise aboard the best liveaboard in the world.

Sept 10 (Wed): Say farewell to the Arenui and her crew in the morning. Depart at 7am from Palu, Sulawesi, to Jakarta. Arrive in Jakarta in one and a half hours. Depart Jakarta at 2:30pm, fly back to Los Angeles. Arrive at LAX at 8:25pm on the same day.

Travel Insurance: 

Travel insurance is optional. However, over the years, we have seen how valuable and beneficial travel insurance can be. These policies will help cover the expenses when your trip is interrupted due to events such as weather, mechanical breakdowns, missed flights/connections, or when someone else has a dive/medical emergency that prevents you from diving.  

We want to help offset the cost of travel insurance and will sponsor 5% of the cost as store credit if you use the links from our website to purchase travel insurance from DAN. We highly recommend it!

Cancellation Policy:

Before  Sept 1, 2024, 1st deposit forfeited. No refund on first deposit.
After Sept 1, 2024, 1st and 2nd deposits forfeited (unless replacement can be found, then 1st deposit forfeited only).
After Feb 1, 2025, 1st, 2nd and 3rd deposits forfeited (unless replacement can be found, then 1st deposit forfeited only).
After May 1, 2025, no refund (unless replacement can be found, then 1st deposit forfeited only).
