Underwater Traffic Jam

Traffic jam around a coral head in Misool, Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The density and diversity of marine life is one of the main reasons why Raja Ampat is considered one of the best dive destinations.

Red Colored "Black" Coral

A large school of glassy sweeper fish (parapriacanthus guentheri) swirling around an overhang with black coral in Misool Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia. You might be wondering why the red colored coral in this picture is called “black” coral. The name comes from the black or brown color of the coral’s skeleton. The living tissue of the coral is brilliantly colored.

Schooling Tropical Fish

Heniochus acuminatus, commonly called pennant coralfish or longfin bannerfish, looks very similar to schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) and Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus). This image was taken in the Banda Sea, Indonesia.

Thimble Jellies

This aggregation of thimble jellyfish (Linuche unguiculata) was spotted during our dive in the Banda Sea, Indonesia. They look cute, but you'd better be careful when you are around them. An accidental contact with these jellyfish causes very itchy rash that appears hours after exposure.

Hello, Up There!

A diver aboard the Spirit of Solomons waving hello to me through the water. The world looks especially beautiful when you are looking through such clear water!
